How the Nigeria Police Force can more effectively respond to sexual and gender-based violence.
In collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission and with technical assistance from the Office of the Vice President, the Justice Research Institute is delivering an initiative designed to strengthen the human capacity and institutional structures of frontline response organisations — with particular emphasis on the Nigeria Police Force.
The overarching aim is to establish the conditions in which survivors feel safe and supported enough to disclose incidents of sexual and gender-based violence. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the effort seeks to standardise the procedures for receiving, documenting and responding to SGBV cases across the country.
From procedure to practice
Working with UN Women, JRI helped draft and validate a standardised national training curriculum for Gender Desk Officers, and supported the development of a Nigeria Police Force Order that institutionalises survivor-centred procedures for receiving, recording and responding to SGBV cases.
The Institute went on to train Gender Desk Officers across all 36 State Commands and the Federal Capital Territory, distributing a simplified Force Order to guide police divisions, and provided technical support and mentorship to the FCT SGBV Response Team to improve coordination and care management for survivors.
