Lessons from designing and delivering trainings for operators and stakeholders in Nigeria’s justice system.
A recurring thread runs through the Justice Research Institute’s work: reform is only as strong as the people and institutions asked to deliver it. Over successive programmes, JRI has designed and implemented capacity-development trainings for operators and stakeholders across the justice sector — the courts, prosecution, law enforcement, regulators and civil society.
These programmes have ranged from executive seminars for judicial officers of the State High Court, Federal High Court and Court of Appeal, to structured training for members of Judicial Service Commissions, and specialised sessions for prosecutors and investigators on human-rights-compliant, preventive approaches to their work.
What we have learned
The most effective trainings begin with the practitioners closest to the problem, are built on current evidence and international best practice, and are designed in partnership with the institutions they serve so that new skills are embedded in everyday systems rather than left on the page.
Delivered in collaboration with partners including anti-corruption agencies and sector regulators, these engagements have strengthened institutional leadership and judicial administration, and continue to inform how JRI approaches capacity building across the justice sector.
